Energy and Climate Change

Downstream Strategies has assessed the prospects for landfill gas-to-energy projects across West Virginia and identified barriers to these projects and a variety of financial incentives to make them cost-effective. We work with landfills and solid waste authorities to develop projects that will destroy methane, a potent greenhouse gas, while bringing new resources to solid waste authorities and helping to develop local economies.

More generally, we conduct strategic energy planning projects that investigate long-term demand and supply options for states and regions. Team members have developed and applied integrated energy and environmental planning software. As policies that address climate change are adopted, cities and states can develop strategies that profit from these policies by, for example, generating and selling carbon credits. Downstream Strategies helps to identify such opportunities and works to outline a path forward that addresses climate change while supporting local economies.
