Stream Biological Assessments

Stream health can be measured by assessing physical, chemical, or biological conditions. While chemical and physical parameters such as pH, temperature, conductivity, and dissolved oxygen are commonly used in water quality surveys, they can miss past events that may result in criteria violations or harmful impacts to biological conditions.

The long-term residence and lack of large-scale mobility of macroinvertebrate communities make these organisms a more accurate indicator of stream health and an effective complement to water quality data. Fish communities can also measure stream health. Downstream Strategies conducts biological stream assessments along with physical and chemical assessments.
